Viktor & Rolf Opens the Archive for a Paris Retrospective

The exhibition will trace more than three decades of haute couture through over 100 looks and immersive installations

Viktor & Rolf will stage its most comprehensive retrospective to date at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, opening January 28, 2027, and running through July 4. The exhibition reflects the Dutch design duo’s enduring influence on conceptual fashion while underscoring the growing role of museum exhibitions in preserving and expanding luxury’s cultural legacy.

Curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot, the exhibition will occupy two floors of the museum’s Christine & Stephen A. Schwarzman galleries, presenting over three decades of Viktor & Rolf’s couture alongside sketches, archival materials, and multimedia installations. Rather than following a traditional chronological format, the retrospective will incorporate theatrical elements—including immersive projections and miniature doll presentations—that reflect the designers’ longstanding dialogue between fashion, performance, and art.

Among the featured works are looks from the house’s landmark “Russian Doll” and “Fashion Statements” collections, both of which helped establish Viktor & Rolf as pioneers of conceptual couture. The exhibition highlights the pair’s ability to merge technical craftsmanship with narrative-driven design, reinforcing the artistic dimension of haute couture beyond the runway.

The Paris retrospective reaffirms Viktor & Rolf’s role as one of couture’s most conceptually influential voices. By placing decades of experimental work within a museum setting, the presentation reflects how fashion exhibitions have become an increasingly important platform for preserving creative legacies while introducing them to new audiences.
