If eyewear campaigns tend to live somewhere between aspirational cool and vague sun-drenched ennui, Chimi has decided to file an objection. For Spring 2026, the Swedish eyewear house stages a courtroom drama titled The Trial, transforming its campaign into a sharply observed exercise in theatrical absurdity. Directed by Shadrinsky and led creatively by Charlie Lindström, the campaign turns a bare-bones set and modest means into something surprisingly magnetic – proof that a clever idea, executed with conviction, can outperform a budget many times its size.
The premise is simple and deliciously strange: witnesses, lawyers, translators, and an audience gather inside a courtroom, each sporting Chimi eyewear with the seriousness of a legal proceeding and the quiet absurdity of fashion fantasy. The cast sit in witness stands, peer over frames, stare impassively through tinted lenses, and collectively create the feeling that something monumental is being debated – though precisely what remains delightfully unclear. Is someone on trial? Is it taste itself? Or perhaps bad sunglasses? Chimi wisely leaves room for interpretation.

Visually, the campaign succeeds because it commits entirely to the bit. The beige courtroom, fluorescent lighting, and procedural mundanity become part of the humor rather than something to escape. A blonde witness nervously chews her fist while wearing oversized frames and a cast wrapped around her arm. A sharply dressed lawyer sits frozen in sleek sunglasses, looking less litigator and more Berlin nightclub philosopher accidentally summoned for jury duty. Elsewhere, characters stare ahead with unsettling calm, their eyewear becoming both armor and personality device. The filmic stillness recalls indie cinema more than traditional luxury advertising – somewhere between Jury Duty, performance art, and a fashion student with impeccable references.

And this is precisely where Chimi punches above its weight. Rather than chasing glossy perfection or celebrity shorthand, the House leans into narrative. The eyewear is never secondary, but neither is it shoved awkwardly into frame. Instead, the sunglasses become part of character-building, worn by personalities rather than mannequins. It is branding through storytelling rather than product placement – a subtle but meaningful distinction.

There is also an admirable confidence in the restraint. With what appears to be a deliberately stripped-back production, the team avoids the common trap of overcompensating through gimmicks or forced surrealism. The concept is singular enough to hold attention. In an increasingly crowded eyewear market where campaigns often blur into algorithmic sameness, The Trial feels memorable because it has an opinion. It understands that fashion, at its best, can be both serious and faintly ridiculous at once.

If there is one lesson here, it is that creative intelligence still matters. Big budgets are lovely, of course – fashion rarely says no to excess – but Chimi reminds us that sharp thinking can sometimes be the best luxury of all. Consider the verdict unanimous: guilty of overdelivering.
