Celebrating the House’s 100th Anniversary, the Book Traces Loro Piana’s History and Craftsmanship
Loro Piana celebrates 100 years of heritage with the release of Master of Fibres, a book published by Assouline and written by historian and journalist Nicholas Foulkes. The volume chronicles the remarkable story of a family of visionary entrepreneurs who transformed a wool trading company into a global luxury powerhouse.
Through in-depth interviews with members of the Loro Piana family and a meticulous exploration of the brand’s archives, Foulkes traces the Maison’s journey from its origins in the mid-1800s to its current status as a leader in luxury textiles. The narrative highlights key moments, from Giovanni Loro Piana’s wool merchant passport in the 19th century to the founding of a wool mill in Valsesia, Piedmont, by Pietro Loro Piana in 1924. Valsesia’s pristine waters were integral to the creation of fine textiles and remain central to the Maison’s production process.
The 1980s marked a turning point for Loro Piana when brothers Pier Luigi and Sergio Loro Piana introduced finished products, such as the now-iconic Grande Unita scarf. Combining Pier Luigi’s engineering expertise with Sergio’s keen sense of style, the Maison elevated its offerings with sophisticated yet understated designs crafted from the finest natural fibers.
The book also celebrates Loro Piana’s commitment to time-honored savoir-faire and virtuoso textile engineering, qualities that have defined its reputation for understated elegance and superior quality.
Housed in a luxury clamshell case, Master of Fibres reflects the Maison’s dedication to craftsmanship. The 196-page book features 150 illustrations and is covered in Tela Sergio, a fabric crafted from cotton and linen—a nod to one of Sergio Loro Piana’s favorite materials. Part of Assouline’s Ultimate Collection, the hand-bound volume includes hand-tipped color plates on art-quality paper, making it a tactile and visual tribute to Loro Piana’s legacy.Master of Fibres is available starting November 21 in select Loro Piana and Assouline stores worldwide, as well as online at Assouline.com.
