A Whimsical Romp Through Reworked 50s Style
On Monday night, the first of July, Marc Jacobs unveiled his Fall 2024 collection titled “Joy, Period.” Following up on his spring collection themed “Wonder,” the new collection leverages nostalgic references with oversized and distorted silhouettes to create a fun and cartoonishly whimsical sense of play.
Jacobs’ designs featured extravagant shapes and a whimsical femininity, blending 2D and 3D elements in a fantastical manner. The runway evoked characters like Olive Oyl from Popeye the Sailor Man and the twisted Stepford Wives with tulip skirts, stiff collared sweaters, and exaggerated silhouettes.
In his show notes, the designer expressed his commitment to choosing love over hate and living authentically. The collection showcased amplified femininity through tweedy suits, pastel cocktail dresses, and oversized quilted handbags.
Jacobs continued to reinforce his signature silhouettes with retro elements like ‘50s polka dots, trompe l’oeil layers, and exaggerated makeup. The show concluded with brightly hued retro ball gowns, adding a touch of glamour to the joyful collection.
