Review of Saint Laurent Spring 2024 Ad Campaign by Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello and Photographer David Sims with Talent Diana Ross and Michael Stipe
The legendary Diana Ross fronts the latest campaign from Saint Laurent. David Sims photographed the star for a Spring 2024 campaign that marks the latest chapter in creative director Anthony Vaccarello’s highly consistent continuation of the house’s glamorous legacy.
Sims’ brings a timelessly minimal approach to lensing the Motown legend, putting the emphasis on the larger-than-life presence on Ross herself, which is upheld by the simple and elegant styling choices of a black dress or a faux-fur coat.
The practice of visual clarity that Vaccarello has cultivated is made for celebrity moments like this; the simple formula comes to life when it is illuminated by such an iconic face – especially one with such a personal connection to the house. Ross was a friend and supporter of Yves Saint Laurent himself since the 70s, and it’s great to see Vaccarello pay homage to this friendship and the vision of his forerunner while guiding it forward. Ross and Saint Laurent are icons of the 20th century, but this campaign confirms that their influence and artistry are still very much alive.
