Zimmermann’s First Store In Hawaii

Zimmermann continues its U.S. retail development with the opening of their first store in Hawaii, situated within the Ala Moana Centre, Honolulu.

The Honolulu space marks the brands twenty-first U.S. store and is preceded by recent openings in Short Hills, Southampton, Naples, Houston and the Miami Design District.

The Zimmermann Honolulu store is 3,026 square feet and was designed by Studio McQualter.

In keeping with the vacation spirit with the city’s many visitors, the store design has been kept light, easy and with a hint of intrigue. This was an integral consideration throughout the design process, which was focussed on offering clients an ongoing sense of escapism. Consciously, we chose to reference local, mid-century modernist architect Vladimir Ossipoff ’s use of screens to filter light throughout the design of the façade to personify this ongoing motif.

Every client is taken on a journey upon entering. This was carefully approached through manipulation of multiple components, from the variety of seating options, the purposeful layout of the store and the unique mixture of finishes and lighting. Continuing the underlying sense of lightness throughout the space, high ceilings work to create vast, calm, and welcoming rooms, whilst custom cast plaster corner lights and a great mid-century pendant by Diego Mardegan up light the space.

The appointment room was designed to create a feeling of intensity; a ‘green room’ with textures and bold fabric and complimented by the aptly titled artwork “Identity Vacation” by Australian artist Michael Mitsas. The curtain fabric was carefully selected for its exuberant depiction of tropical life. Along the way, clients discover artworks and vintage pieces like the Richard Lindner signed lithograph and signed monumental Alvino Bagni vase, complimented by a pair of abstract paintings commissioned by artist Jordy van den Nieuwendijk for the main retail area.

It’s very exciting to open our first store in Hawaii. As a young girl, Honolulu was a destination of my first overseas trip with my family so it holds fond memories. Designing the store was a very organic process and really allowed us to embrace feelings of summer, and vacation – many qualities that are inherent to our brand. We
played with textures, colours and lighting to dream up an inviting and relaxed space for our guests. One of my favourite touches is the lithograph signed by Richard Lindner – a very special piece.
