Isabel Marant

Spring 2020 Ad Campaign

Isabel Marant’s Spring 2020 campaign is an intimate postcard from the beaches of Brazil.

The French label enlisted Juergen Teller to handle both photography and video direction for the campaign. The renowned photographer approaches the campaign with his signature candidness, capturing models Rebecca Leigh and Jonas Glöer with an intimacy and realism that is rarely found in fashion photography. The images feel more like unearthed vacation photos, a selection of favorite moments that were arranged in a scrapbook or video collage.

But there is an aesthetic consistency that elevates them above the everyday and unifies them as a singular artistic project. Through deliberate use of color palette and contrast, Teller evokes the sense of a conversation between object and interpretation, and the way experience becomes memory. Vegetation and architecture overlap; erect swathes of orange appear and reappear; figures dressed in black occupy colorful foregrounds while sunny beaches recede into the background.

Colorful and casual, this campaign revels in the eclecticism of life and the continuity we try to understand in it. Juergen Teller’s sensitive eye provides a window through which we see a mysterious beauty in the mundane, and this campaign succeeds by creating a unique space in which this process can unfold.
