Alaïa / Grès Exhibition: A Journey Beyond Fashion

Olivier Saillard Curates the Forthcoming Galerie Azzedine Alaïa Exhibition, Showing 11th September 2023 until the 11th of February 2024

In an unprecedented and captivating display, the works of Madame Grès and Alaïa are brought together for the first time. These two visionary designers, united by their commitment to formal principles, cutting techniques, and harmonious fabric and color choices, take visitors on a journey transcending mere fashion. With 60 stunning creations on display, the exhibition unveils the timeless elegance of one and the captivating artistry of the other, showcasing the dialogue between these two remarkable dress sculptors.

Madame Grès, also known as Germaine Krebs, began her illustrious career in the 1930s, crafting designs that melded the beauty of ancient statuary with modern sensibilities through her innovative draping technique. Her journey led her to establish the iconic Maison Grès, where her signature timeless collections graced the white salons at 1 rue de la Paix in Paris until 1987. Throughout the decades, she dressed luminaries such as Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and Grace Kelly.

Similarly, Azzedine Alaïa’s genius shone brightly, quietly, and determinedly. With a background in sculpture from the School of Fine Arts in Tunis, Alaïa channeled his artistic vision into fashion, creating long, fluid, and pleated dresses reminiscent of Grès’ drapery mastery. His designs embraced the softness of jersey fabrics and knitwear, revealing a pursuit of proportion and precision in cutting that transcended both evening and daytime models.

While there is no evidence of a direct encounter between the two couturiers, their creations undoubtedly exchanged whispers of mutual inspiration. Both Grès and Alaïa were apostles of simplicity, infusing seemingly effortless designs with inherent complexity. Their meticulous selection of monochromatic colors, especially intense black and plaster white, further united their creative spirits.

Through this groundbreaking exhibition, visitors can witness the artistry of two exceptional creators, whose dedication to their craft elevated draping and cutting to guiding principles in the history of fashion. Madame Grès and Alaïa, two remarkable individuals, now stand together in this extraordinary showcase of sculpted dresses, offering a timeless lesson in style and design that reaches far beyond the bounds of fashion.
