New Jury Members Join Jonathan Anderson for the 2025 Edition of the Prestigious Art Award
The Loewe Foundation has announced the opening of submissions for the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2025. This prestigious award ceremony will take place at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid next spring. Entries for the eighth edition of the Prize will be accepted until October 30, 2024. Interested artists can submit their work through loewecraftprize.com.
Established in 2016, the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize aims to showcase and celebrate excellence, artistic merit, and innovation in modern craft. The Prize recognizes international artists who create objects of exceptional aesthetic value. Open to anyone over 18 years of age working in a craft-based profession, the competition offers a grand prize of 50,000 euros to the winner, with two special mentions each receiving 5,000 euros.
Loewe’s creative director Jonathan Anderson, who conceived the award, aims to highlight the importance of craft in contemporary culture and honor artists whose talent and vision set a future standard. The Prize pays homage to Loewe’s origins as a collective craft workshop founded in 1846. The 2024 edition received over 3,900 submissions from 124 countries and regions worldwide. Anderson emphasizes the timeless relevance of craft, stating,
“Craft is always going to be modern. It is about creating objects that have a formula of their own and speak their own language, creating a dialogue that didn’t exist before. It is about newness as much as it is about tradition.”
An expert panel comprising artists, essayists, and curators will review all submissions to select a shortlist of up to 30 works for the 2025 Prize. The panel has welcomed new members including Michelle Fisher, Curator of Contemporary Decorative Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston; Kevin Grey, metal artist and 2024 Craft Prize finalist; Ibrahim Mahama, mixed media artist; and Aya Oki, glass artist and 2024 Craft Prize finalist. The selection criteria include originality, clear artistic vision, precise execution, material excellence, innovative value, and a distinct authorial mark.
The shortlisted works will be exhibited at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid. The Prize’s jury will select the winning piece from this exhibition, with the winner being announced during a ceremony at the museum in spring 2025.
New members joining the 2025 jury are Andrés Anza, winner of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize 2024, and Frida Escobedo, essayist and architect. Andrés Anza was announced as the winner of the 2024 Prize on May 14, 2024, coinciding with the opening of the 2024 Craft Prize exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. The 2024 shortlisted works are available for viewing online at craftprizeexhibition.loewe.com.
