Telfar’s 20th Anniversary Lower Manhattan Catwalk

During the past week of polished, buttoned-up, refined runway shows in Milan, Telfar Clemens’ fashion show was a breath of hot, exhaust-filled, New York City fresh air. This past Saturday, Clemens debuted a new collection in his first official Telfar show in three years. The collection features unique silhouettes, bright colors, and intricate textures, trademarks of Clemens’ signature design, a fitting tribute for the brand’s 20th anniversary.

This “fashion show” took place on Cortlandt Alley, situated between Broadway and Lafayette Street in Lower Manhattan. For many reasons, the show was uncommon. Outside, in the middle of the street, models walked surrounded by walls of vibrant street art, a live band, and the show-goers themselves. Held during the second week of June, Clemens’ show breaks the “rules” of runway. Just two days after Juneteenth and in the heart of Pride Month, Clemens uses this show and his collection as a unifying, empowering moment in the midst of today’s political climate.

The audience, and those walking in the show, were composed of Clemens’ friends, family, and admirers. Not a single department or specialty store buyer could be found in the audience, and only a scattering of editors were present. This event wasn’t put on for the industry, but rather, for the people.

On Saturday, Clemens showed that he is deeply engaged with and invested in his community. Through Telfar, he is committed to crafting narratives that bring light and life to what matters to him.

With its nod to “trash”-inspired I ♥ NY bags and the gritty charm of New York’s alleyways, this show was an absolute treasure.
