Carven Appoints Kai Nesselrath as Design Director

The former Saint Laurent womenswear head designer will debut his first collection for the French house during Paris Fashion Week in Spring 2027

Carven has named Kai Nesselrath as its new Design Director, marking the latest chapter in the French fashion house’s ongoing repositioning under owner ICCF Group. Nesselrath will present his debut collection for the brand during Paris Fashion Week in the Fall, as part of the Spring 2027 season.

The appointment brings to Carven a designer with nearly a decade of experience at Saint Laurent, where he most recently served as Womenswear Head Designer. Born in Italy and of German heritage, Nesselrath studied at Polimoda, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, and Central Saint Martins before beginning his career with a brief tenure at Chanel. His experience spans both luxury ready-to-wear development and studio leadership, positioning him to guide Carven’s next creative phase.

Shawna Tao, Chief Executive Officer of Carven, described the appointment as a reflection of the house’s commitment to new creative perspectives. “A new generation’s perspective on the world feels especially important today,” she said. “The essence of Carven is a fresh and courageous creator’s spirit, and we believe Kai is uniquely suited to interpret and express it.”

Nesselrath said he approached the role with “lightness and optimism,” adding, “I love clothes, spaces and conversations that encourage breathing. It’s an honor to keep Madame Carven’s values alive. I am very grateful to Shawna for her trust and the journey ahead together.”

The appointment follows a period of transition for the house, which has seen several creative leadership changes in recent years. Acquired by ICCF Group in 2018, Carven has sought to strengthen its position within the contemporary luxury market while reconnecting with the values established by founder Marie-Louise Carven-Grog when she launched the brand in 1945. Known for introducing a sense of ease and practicality to postwar Paris fashion, Carven built a reputation for accessible elegance that distinguished it from many of its couture contemporaries.

Nesselrath’s arrival signals a renewed focus on creative development as Carven continues its broader revival strategy. His first collection will be closely watched by industry observers as the house works to balance its heritage with the expectations of a new generation of luxury consumers.
