Loro Piana Opens “Studies Chapter I: On the Plaid” Installation in Milan

The exhibition explores the plaid as a central element of the House’s interior design language during Milan Design Week

Loro Piana opened “Studies Chapter I: On the Plaid,” a new installation at its Milan headquarters in the Cortile della Seta, running from April 21 to April 26, 2026. The project marked the first chapter of Studies, an evolving framework examining the brand’s approach to interiors through focused case studies.

The installation centered on the plaid, a product category that has been part of Loro Piana’s offering since the mid-1980s alongside scarves. Presented as a field of technical and material experimentation, the exhibition featured twenty-four individual plaids, each developed as a distinct study. Differentiated by construction, pattern, and finishing techniques, the pieces were displayed sequentially as a passage, forming an index of approaches to a single object.

The scenography adopted a curatorial format, pairing finished pieces with the raw materials—fibres and yarns—that define the brand’s production process. Materials including vicuña, baby cashmere, cashmere, The Gift of Kings®, and Loro Piana Royal Lightness® were shown alongside linen and proprietary fabrics such as Wish® wool and Pecora Nera® wool. Techniques including embroidery, appliqué, handloom weaving, needle punching, patchwork, and screen printing illustrated the range of textile processes applied across the collection.

The exhibition also incorporated references from the brand’s archives, translating historical motifs and graphic elements into contemporary compositions. Sections such as “Loro Piana Sceneries,” “Codes of the House,” and “Botanic Repertoire” explored themes including landscape, heritage patterns, and botanical references, while “Cardo Paisley” and “Textured Abstractions” examined the evolution of decorative and material expression within the plaid format.

Each piece was produced on a made-to-order basis, reinforcing the role of customization within Loro Piana’s interiors offering. The installation positioned the plaid not only as a finished product but as a synthesis of material research, technical expertise, and the brand’s broader identity, underscoring its continued investment in textile development and interior design as part of its strategic expansion.
