Under Street Media’s Umbrella, Justin Moran Leads the Way
In a significant move for the publishing world, Street Media, known for titles like The Village Voice and LA Weekly, has announced the reappointment of Justin Moran as the editor in chief of Paper Magazine, following their acquisition of the publication in June.
Moran, who began his journey with Paper in 2017, initially serving as the digital managing editor for papermag.com, has had an illustrious rise within the company. He ascended to the role of digital director and then took the helm as editor in chief in July 2022. However, a series of internal challenges led to Paper pausing its publications in May 2023.
Moran’s leadership emphasizes championing emerging voices and spotlighting narratives often overlooked by mainstream media, aligning perfectly with Paper’s foundational ethos. With the magazine set to restart its digital publishing ahead of its 40th anniversary in 2024, Moran is actively forming a dynamic editorial team. Notably, Matt Wille is making a return, reinstating his role as the managing editor.
Brian Calle, Street Media’s chief executive officer, expressed his enthusiasm for the resurgence, highlighting Moran and Wille’s esteemed reputations. Calle is optimistic about the future they are carving out for Paper, leveraging its distinctive and avant-garde worldview.
Paper Magazine, established in New York City in 1984, has always been at the forefront of art, culture, and style, consistently pushing boundaries. Its prominence was undeniably solidified in 2014 with its iconic Kim Kardashian cover by Jean-Paul Goude, which skyrocketed its digital visits to 70 million unique visitors monthly.
Earlier this year, the magazine faced challenges, with layoffs driven by economic pressures and declining ad revenues. Tom Florio, the then-publisher, attributed the economic downturn as the central cause. However, under Calle’s strategic acquisition in June, there’s a palpable intent to rejuvenate the brand and bring back its former staff to navigate Paper into its next evolution.
To commemorate Moran’s return and the imminent relaunch, a celebratory dinner is on the cards during New York Fashion Week. The event will unfold at the eagerly awaited West Village restaurant, Ambra, showcasing the culinary expertise of executive chef John DeLucie and helmed by owner Andrea Ienna.
