New Line Draws Influence from German Artist Joseph Beuys’ Performance Art Piece

JW Anderson and A.P.C. have launched a collaborative collection, drawing inspiration from the renowned art piece ‘I Like America and America Likes Me’ by German artist Joseph Beuys. In 1974, Beuys staged a symbolic act against the Vietnam War. He traveled from Dusseldorf to New York, wrapping himself in a felt blanket during the transit, signifying a detachment from the external world. His journey ended with a three-day stay at the René Block Gallery, where he coexisted with a coyote.

This collection melds Beuys’s artistry into fashion, serving as a reflection of Anderson’s unique style, suitable for both men and women. It presents two primary silhouettes: the first being more streamlined, incorporating black denim, a motorcycle jacket, and handcrafted cotton knitwear. In contrast, the second embodies a more relaxed hippie flair, featuring multicolored knitwear and vintage-style denim. A significant introduction is a stonewashed appearance achieved via environmentally friendly laser technology, a pioneering effort by A.P.C.

Hints to Beuys’s legendary performance are woven throughout the collection. For instance, the coarse wool of the duffle coat subtly mirrors Beuys’ iconic felt blanket. Vibrant T-shirts and several collection pieces bear distinct graphics, including the ambulance image and the gallery’s address (409 West Broadway).

This project resonated with my current perspective on fashion. The process felt genuine. We often feel compelled to revamp things unnecessarily, whereas celebrating them can be more exhilarating. A.P.C. excels in maintaining contemporary relevance without being excessive.

A.P.C.’s Creative Director, Jean Touitou, expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration, noting, “Interactions with Jonathan always led to swift and constructive exchanges. He has an exceptional ability to refine and enhance initial concepts. Our combined approach felt like a seamless creative dialogue, leading to the birth of innovative designs and visions. This collaboration allowed us to venture beyond our typical boundaries, drawing from Beuys’s journey and legacy.”
