Business Leader and Art Philanthropist Remembered for Five-Decade Legacy
Leonard A. Lauder, former Chairman and guiding force behind the global expansion of the Estée Lauder Companies, died peacefully at home on June 14. He was 92.
The eldest son of Estée and Joseph Lauder, he joined the cosmetics company in 1958 and spent more than five decades shaping it into a multinational enterprise. Under his leadership as President, CEO, and Chairman, the company launched new brands such as Clinique and Lab Series and made strategic acquisitions including MAC, Aveda, Jo Malone London, and La Mer, helping to solidify Estée Lauder as a dominant name in the beauty industry.
Lauder was equally known for his contributions to philanthropy and the arts. His landmark donation of Cubist artwork—valued at over $1 billion—to the Metropolitan Museum of Art stands as one of the most significant gifts of its kind. He also played a key role in advancing medical research, co-founding the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center and supporting Alzheimer’s initiatives.
Tributes from across the industry reflected his wide-ranging influence. Estée Lauder Companies President Stéphane de La Faverie called him “an icon and pioneer.” Ronald Lauder, his brother, noted that “his legacy extends far beyond being the heart of our family. His impact will be felt for generations thanks to his tireless philanthropy, advocacy, and creativity in tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges.”
Known for his emphasis on storytelling and strategic brand building, Leonard Lauder remained active in the company’s operations well into his later years. In addition to his business and philanthropic achievements, he was widely regarded as a mentor and industry elder statesman.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Glickman Lauder; sons William and Gary; five grandchildren; and an extended family. A private service will be held.
From beauty counters around the world to the halls of major museums, Leonard A. Lauder’s legacy is marked by vision, generosity, and enduring cultural impact.
