The Value of Ideas

As Fashion Moves From Basel To Florence And Milan, A Reminder That Creativity Remains The Industry’s Most Enduring Currency

This week feels like a reminder of fashion’s unique ability to exist in two worlds at once.

On one side, headlines are dominated by scale. Elon Musk became the world’s first trillionaire, a milestone almost impossible to comprehend. A trillion dollars is a number so large it begins to lose meaning.

On the other side, I’ll spend the week moving through a very different set of conversations.

Tonight, I’ll be in Basel as the Zegna family honors artist Martha Atienza during Art Basel. From there, attention turns to Shanghai, where Max Mara celebrates its 75th anniversary with a Resort 2027 show at the Long Museum West Bund. Then it’s on to Florence for Pitti Uomo, where Simone Rocha will present her first dedicated menswear show before Milan Men’s Fashion Week begins with Prada, Ralph Lauren, Thom Browne, and many others setting the tone for the season ahead.

It’s a busy schedule, but looking at it all together, I’m reminded that luxury’s most valuable currency has never really been scale.

It’s ideas.

The idea that a family can spend years supporting artists. The idea that a house can remain relevant after 75 years. The idea that a designer can approach menswear with a fresh perspective. The idea that craftsmanship, culture, and creativity still matter in a world increasingly measured by numbers.

That’s what I’ll be watching for this week.

Not simply who showed the biggest collection, hosted the largest event, or generated the loudest headline. But who offered a point of view. Who moved the conversation forward. Who reminded us that creativity remains one of the few assets that appreciates when it’s shared.

What continues to inspire me most is that so many of you approach this industry the same way. Not as spectators, but as participants. As people who care about ideas, craftsmanship, creativity, and where fashion is headed next.

Your curiosity challenges us to look deeper, ask better questions, and seek out the stories behind the headlines.

We’ll be on the ground throughout the week bringing those conversations back to you.

Warm regards,
Kenneth Richard
