Chanel’s Support for the Film Includes Financial Backing and Costume Support
Chanel has shared details of its artistic and financial support for Spirit World, the latest film by Singaporean director Eric Khoo.
Chanel’s involvement with Spirit World included financial backing for the production, support for costume designer Pascaline Chavanne, and providing jewelry and outfits for Deneuve and actress Maiya Goshima. Chanel’s connection with Deneuve extends back to her days as the face of the N°5 fragrance in the U.S. and her wearing Chanel creations in films, including Marcello Mio, presented at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.
The feature film, set in Japan and produced by Matilde Incerti, follows the story of fictional musician Claire Emery, portrayed by Catherine Deneuve, who travels to Tokyo for a farewell concert. However, after her sudden death, Emery transforms into a ghost and is guided through the spirit world by Yuzo, played by Yutaka Takenouchi, one of her devoted fans. The film explores the rich tradition of ghost mythology in Japanese culture, a theme that dates back to the Edo period and has been represented in various forms of Japanese art and cinema.
“By supporting this project, Chanel encourages the artistic vision of one of today’s biggest directors and the recognition of a great Singaporean voice,” the company stated.
Eric Khoo, a prominent figure in Singaporean cinema, has gained international acclaim for his work, from his first film Mee Pok Man in 1995 to My Magic, which was in official competition at Cannes in 2008.
Spirit World premiered on October 11, 2024, at the Busan International Film Festival, where Chanel is a festival partner.
