Having Worked at the House Since 2018, Klausner Steps Up to Succeed Its Eponymous Founder
Dries Van Noten has named Julian Klausner as its new creative director, succeeding the iconic Belgian designer who founded the brand nearly four decades ago. Klausner, a 33-year-old Belgian designer, will oversee both menswear and womenswear collections, marking a significant new chapter for the label.
“I have complete confidence in Julian’s creativity and vision,” said Dries Van Noten in a statement. “He is not only a talented designer but also a clear choice to take over after my departure. His deep understanding of the brand and its values will ensure a seamless transition and a bright future.”
Klausner has worked with the house since 2018, initially as a womenswear designer under Van Noten’s leadership. His appointment reflects the brand’s commitment to continuity, with the designer poised to honor the label’s rich heritage while steering it into the future.
Born and educated in Belgium, Klausner graduated in 2016 from the renowned fashion program at La Cambre in Brussels. He gained early experience through internships at Thom Browne, Kenzo, and Maison Margiela before joining Margiela as a junior designer. Klausner’s trajectory has been defined by his hands-on approach and deep appreciation for craftsmanship – qualities that align seamlessly with Dries Van Noten’s ethos.
“The incomparable legacy that Dries is leaving behind is monumental, serving as an endless source of precious inspiration,” Klausner reflected. “I look forward to embarking on new ambitious challenges while honoring the heritage we all cherish.”
Van Noten’s departure marks the end of an era for the brand he launched in 1986 as a menswear label. A founding member of the Antwerp Six, he built a reputation for dignified, artful designs defined by bold prints, embroidery, and exquisite tailoring. His womenswear debut came in 1993, earning him a place as one of fashion’s most enduring and influential creatives.
In 2018, Van Noten sold a majority stake in his brand to Puig, remaining involved as chief creative officer until his retirement earlier this year. His final runway collection in June 2024 celebrated his storied career, followed by a studio-designed collection for Spring 2025, where Van Noten was present as an observer.
Klausner’s first womenswear collection will debut on March 5 during Paris Fashion Week. The brand will take a different approach for its Fall 2025 menswear collection, presenting it in lookbook form under Klausner’s direction, with a runway show planned for June 2025.
As creative director, Klausner faces the challenge of continuing the legacy of a designer synonymous with elevated, artistic fashion. Puig noted in its earnings statement that niche brands like Dries Van Noten have shown strong growth, reflecting the label’s increasing global momentum. With Klausner’s talent and vision, the house is poised to evolve while remaining true to its founder’s distinct identity.
