The CFDA has added 14 new designers, bringing its total membership to 517. The new members include Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia of Monse and Oscar de la Renta; Stirling Barrett of Krewe; Becca McCharen-Tran of Chromat; Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss; Chris Leba of R13; Wing Yin Yau of Wwake; Bonnie Young of By. Bonnie Young; Chloe Gosselin; Andrea Fohrman; Julia Jenztsch; Monica Sordo; Temple St. Clair; and Off-White’s Virgil Abloh.
The organization is very proud to add the 2017 New Members to our roster. Each of these 14 designers stood out to the Admissions Committee and Board of Directors as uniquely and extremely talented.
The CFDA admissions process occurs once a year. Interested candidates must contact the CFDA in the spring to request admissions materials, and to be eligible, candidates must be American citizens designing in the US or abroad, or foreign nationals with businesses based in the US. The Admissions Committee then recommends selected candidates for membership to the Board of Directors, which reviews submissions and ratifies the decisions.
This year’s admissions have worked with the CFDA in some capacity, either as a partner for a special collection or as part of a competition connected with the CFDA. Stirling Barrett was a runner-up for the 2016 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and Chloe Gosselin was also part of the competition, Kerby Jean-Raymond competed in the 2016-17 Woolmark US Prize, and Becca McCharen-Tran is one of many finalists of the 2017 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.
In addition, Chris Leba partnered with the CFDA and Barneys on a Made in New York collection, Wing Yin Yau was part of the CFDA + Lexus Fashion Initiative in 2015, and finally Virgil Abloh was nominated for the Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent at the 2017 CFDA Awards, but lost out to Monse designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia.
Congratulations to the 14 new CFDA members and best of luck to the next crop of eligible designers.
