adam&eveDDB helps JOHN LEWIS put a Man On The Moon


Back in 2011, retailer John Lewis and agency adam&eveDDB launched a holiday TV campaign that sparked the space race for retailers everywhere in the UK. Soon after a game of retail advertising one-upmanship unfolded as season after season retailers produced bigger and better holiday ad campaigns. So it is only fitting that this season the team once again launches one of the U.K.’s biggest ad campaigns that figuratively puts a man on the moon.

In the “Man on the Moon” spot directed by Kim Gehrig, another child wants to give as much as receive, a common theme of the season. In this case the receiver is an elderly and lonely gentleman isolated on the moon. In fitting with the storyline, John Lewis has linked up with Age UK to help some of the million of elderly in the U.K., donating proceeds from the sale of select items to the cause as well as developing in-store and online activity.

Moon pop-up shops will open in 11 stores where shoppers will be able to take photos with a lunar backdrop, and learn about the moon as well as Age UK. An app that brings the moon to life with games and special features has also been developed.

Rising musical star Aurora, whose name alone works with the theme, covers Oasis’ “Half the World Away” for the spot making it a likley contender for song of the season.

With the holistic campaign activating at all touchpoints, The Impression found the partnership of adam&eveDDB and John Lewis once again amping up the race for mind share space, while taking one small step for the retailer and one giant leap for holiday marketing.
