The Final Installment of the Gabrielle Series Stars Music and Fashion Icon Pharrell Williams Channeling Coco Chanel in an Unlikely Way
BY OBI ANYANWU
The Gabrielle series from Chanel is about energy, passion, freedom and living to your fullest, and there are few men that have lived their lives to the fullest quite like Pharrell Williams. The music producer is an icon in music, fashion, and entertainment, and with the Gabrielle series, he has the honor of being the first man to model a Chanel bag in a campaign.
Much like Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne, and Caroline de Maigret who also starred in the Gabrielle campaign, Pharrell channels Coco Chanel’s unbridled energy and spirit for the fourth and final installment of the Gabrielle series.
The short begins with Pharrell entering an empty arena that is in the middle of set up. After calling out to see if anyone is present, Pharrell has some fun by riding and climbing on trunks and walking steel beams like a tightrope. The polymath from Virginia Beach is applauded by a young child at the arena floor who reveals the name Gabrielle written on his palm. Pharrell reads the name like a question before smirking to the viewer and realizing that Gabrielle was the source of his moment of carefree energy.
“Freedom” is much more than a song for Pharrell (and a platinum single at that). He found his lane with music, getting his start with Teddy Riley before working with Sean “Diddy” Combs, Jay Z, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Missy Elliott, and Daft Punk among others, and he later ventured into fashion with Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream, and art, television and philanthropy. It’s fitting that a young child helps Pharrell discover that his energy came from Chanel, because we are our most free as a youth. Pharrell is one of the lucky ones to have done things on his own terms, even today.
There are so few men worthy of holding the distinction as the first man to model a Chanel bag in a campaign, and Pharrell is at the top of that very short list.
