The Store Scout | PIERRE HARDY Japan Flagship
BY KENNETH RICHARD
Pierre Hardy has always done an excellent job at balancing dualities. For over 25 years now the designer has lead the footwear design for Hermès while simultaneously growing his own label. This duality serves him well and is represented in the launch of his third stand alone boutique located in Tokyo’s Aoyama district at 5-5-25, Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku.
The 80 square-meter space combines minimal and graphic elements while juxtaposing raw and sophisticated materials. The interior has darkened cement walls with burnt wood surfaces (Shou-sugi-ban Yakisugi). Like his other boutiques in New York and paris, the Tokyo store also uses metallic IPN construction beams as well as velvet, taupe carpeting, and touches of gold.
The geometry of the space allows the collections to be shown in different ambiances: on large central burnt wood tables, on the metallic “rails” in the windows or even displayed as if in a ray of light. Seating and display podiums form a single unit: hung at the same level, as if suspended, made for sitting or for showing the collections.
The boutique will offer the men’s and women’s shoes and bags collections.
