Bergdorf Goodman devotes its iconic holiday window displays to New York City and its historic cultural institutions.

The holiday season is a magical time in New York City, with its lights and decorations on brownstone buildings, trees and streetlights, and with annual celebrations like the Thanksgiving Parade and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting. Bergdorf Goodman kicks off the holiday festivities every year with the unveiling of its holiday windows, and this year, the Fifth Avenue retailer devotes its iconic window displays to New York City, its home for nearly 120 years.

Entitled “To New York With Love,” the holiday windows honor New York City’s historic cultural institutions: The American Museum of Natural History, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Museum of the Moving Image, The New York Botanical Garden, New York Philharmonic, New-York Historical Society and UrbanGlass, capturing their respective histories and influences on music, film and visual arts.

David Hoey, Senior Director of Visual Presentation, and his team worked on this project for 10 months, and the result features a ringmaster with a band of bejeweled dinosaurs, in reference to the American Museum of Natural History, an orchestra conductor surrounded by red neon musical instruments for the New York Philharmonic and two gardeners seated amongst trees, plants and flowers for the New York Botanical Garden among other displays. Hoey also tapped Brooklyn-based Burke & Pryde Studio and New York artist Mark Gagnon to create various media for the windows.

“While exploring this theme, we knew the windows had to be dynamic and multilayered to evoke the excitement of New York today, while simultaneously celebrating the city’s past” said Hoey. “Our institutional partners provided an array of subject matter to inspire us, so we crafted a completely different type of window for each organization. And since we love putting on a show, we have made the windows kaleidoscopic and entertaining.”

In the spirit of giving, Bergdorf partnered with each institution to create one-of-a-kind experiences and gifts with Loro Piana, Adam Lippes, Kith, Lorraine Schwartz and David Webb. The gifts will be available in store and on BG.com and a percentage from each gift will be donated to the corresponding institution. Also, each institution will receive 100% of the proceeds from each experience purchased through December 24.
