Amber Valletta Named FIT’s First Sustainability Ambassador

FIT announced that model, actress, and activist Amber Valletta has been named the college’s first sustainability ambassador, further solidifying FIT’s commitment to expanding sustainability education and awareness to address the challenges facing the creative industries. One of the most celebrated supermodels of the modern era, Valletta has also found extraordinary success as an activist, lending her voice to the issues of sustainable fashion. Valletta’s ambassadorship is a natural extension of her ongoing contributions to FIT, all of which have focused on sustainability. In addition to serving on the FIT Foundation board, she delivered the keynote speech at the 2019 Sustainable Business and Design Conference and hosted the 2019 and 2021 awards galas, both of which were focused on sustainable solutions and innovation.

In her role as FIT’s sustainability ambassador, Valletta will work closely with the FIT community, alumni, and partners throughout the 2021–2022 academic year and beyond. During this year’s Sustainability Awareness Week, which will take place virtually October 4–8, she will moderate a student roundtable discussion among previous FIT Biodesign Challenge winners to discuss the significance of biotechnology in fashion, how brands can incorporate sustainable materials into their products, and the overall impact biotechnology will make on the future of fashion. Valletta will also collaborate with the current Biodesign Challenge—mentoring students, helping recruit industry mentors, and other support—as well as spearhead fundraising efforts for the FIT Sustainability Fund, and help with planning the 2022 Sustainable Business and Design Conference, among other partnerships and programming opportunities.

“Over the years, Amber has been deeply involved in FIT’s sustainability initiatives both on and off-campus, and has quickly become a close friend of the college,” said President Joyce F. Brown. “She is also a dedicated and respected advocate and activist, which makes naming her our first official sustainability ambassador a natural and easy decision. We are proud to have her represent our community and help us continue to make a lasting impact on the world around us.”

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate and learn from the students, educators, and the entire FIT community,” said Valletta. “At FIT, they have made sustainability a focal point that directs both their fundraising efforts and curriculum, which will undoubtedly bring about positive changes for the future of creative industries.”

FIT holds sustainability as a pillar of its strategic plan and within its community. In addition to the creation of the sustainability ambassador role, the college offers many courses and programs that focus on sustainability, including Sustainability in Fashion Merchandising, a minor in Ethics and Sustainability, Sustainable Packaging, International Corporate Responsibility, and more. The college also offers various extracurricular activities for students to get involved in sustainability, such as the Ethics and Sustainability Club, Sustainability Council, and the Student Government Association. Current projects include a student-run program to install and maintain beehives on the college’s rooftop, developing sustainable textiles through participation in the annual Biodesign Challenge, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly dyeing practices, and the Loop for Good pop-up, among other initiatives.

Boramy Viguier

Vuarnet Announced the Appointment of Boramy Viguier as Creative Director

Boramy studied fashion at Central Saint Martins, London. After working with Craig Green and Alexander McQueen, he joined the Lanvin Homme design studio in 2013 and launched his own brand in 2018. His collections were highly regarded by critics and buyers. After a few seasons, he developed a dreamlink aesthetic with medieval influences where the worlds of technical and utilitarian clothing collided. And in 2019, he was a finalist for the ANDAM prize.

For Vuarnet, Boramy Viguier will simultaneously develop the line of sunglasses and the brand’s clothing offering. He will be responsible for the design of technical mountain clothing, as well as Vuarnet 1957, a collection made entirely in France, drawing inspiration from the archives of the house.

“My first meeting with Boramy Viguier was scheduled for 45 minutes, but actually lasted 3 hours. I immediately felt that Boramy fully understood the intrinsic values of the brand through his deep love of the mountains and that he’d know how to translate the Vuarnet spirit of excellence. His talent, creativity, and vision will allow Vuarnet to renew itself during this high growth period,” says David Belhassen, CEO of Vuarnet.

I am passionate about the mountains and I am very happy to be able to continue the Vuarnet legacy and breathe new life into the house. For me, Vuarnet represents the French mountains, a poetic and hedonistic alpine art of living, one that calls for transcendence and contemplation, ”says Boramy Viguier.

The first collections designed by Boramy Viguier for Vuarnet will be available in October 2021.

Paolo de Cesare Appointed CEO of Matchesfashion

“Proud to be joining MatchesFashion as their new CEO. The company pioneered luxury e-commerce and will continue to innovate and delight the most demanding global customers!” – Paolo de Cesare LinkedIn announcement.

The Former Printemps CEO Paolo de Cesare will succeed Ajay Kavan. Ajay left in March of this year. Maureen Chiquet, serving as executive chairwoman of Matchesfashion since Kavan’s departure, will return to her position on the board upon commencement of Paolo’s role as CEO later this year.

With more than 30 years of expertise in the luxury and retail sectors, including 12 years as president and CEO of the Printemps Group, from 2007-2020, Paolo’s expertise on refocusing luxury brands will sure to be an asset in a competitive online luxury market.

Tom Hall, partner at Apax Partners and member of the board at Matchesfashion, said de Cesare’s “understanding of luxury, his energy and enthusiasm, and his long and varied experience as a senior executive around the globe make him ideally suited for the role. SHANG XIA appoints Yang Li as Fashion Creative Director

SHANG XIA, jointly held by Exor, Hermès and Qiong Er Jiang announces that it has appointed Yang Li as its Fashion Creative Director with immediate effect.

Yang Li’s uniquely modern vision and innovative style makes him an ideal candidate for this important role. Co-Founder & Creative Director of SHANG XIA, Qiong Er Jiang, sees Yang Li as the perfect fit, commenting, “Yang Li’s personality and proven talent, as well as his vision of modernity and understanding of sustainability, means he will naturally embrace and enrich the unique heritage of SHANG XIA.”

Born in Beijing, China, in 1987, Yang Li then spent his teenage years in Perth, Australia before receiving a scholarship to study at London’s Central Saint Martins in 2007. He founded his eponymous label in 2010 and was shortlisted for the first LVMH prize in 2014.

Known for drawing inspiration from subcultures in the music and art scenes, Yang Li’s design philosophy continuously explores the concepts of duality and unexpected contrasts. His classic tailoring blends with poetic silhouettes, with a style that is polished and authentic in equal measure.

Kim Bekker

Kim Bekker appointed First Artistic Director at Isabel Marant

Kim Bekker will lead Isabel Marant as the brand’s new artistic director. Isabel Marant has helmed the luxury brand since its launch in 1994. Bekker, whose past experience includes stints at Chloé and Saint Laurent as well as a decade from 2008-2018 working under Marant herself, will supervise women’s, men’s, and accessories collections.

“The Dutch designer will work alongside Isabel Marant and will supervise women’s, men’s and accessories collections, and will accompany the growth of the house and its development projects,” the brand said in a statement.


Jennie Is The Face Of The Coco Neige 2021/22 Collection Campaign 

South Korean singer JENNIE is the face of the Coco Neige 2021/22 collection campaign shot by Dutch photography duo Inez & Vinoodh. 

A member of the K-pop group BLACKPINK since 2016 and a CHANEL ambassador since 2017, JENNIE notably gave a showcase performance at the opening of the CHANEL flagship store in Seoul in 2019. Since the beginning of her career, her aura has gone beyond the borders of her home country leading to international stardom. JENNIE was the first Korean artist to perform with BLACKPINK at the Coachella festival in 2019. With this campaign, she continues to forge links with CHANEL: “Just hearing about being able to join the Coco Neige collection was like a dream!” she revealed during the shoot. 

The artist naturally embodies this collection dedicated to the mountains. “I love to go out in the snow, doing winter sports. I really like how snow just makes you feel. Wearing these clothes makes me feel like I’m ready to ski tomorrow.”
