Givenchy Celebrates 10th anniversary of its Antigona Bag with New Antigona Soft Collection
Let’s face it, fashion’s product live-cycles can be a dizzying display of in-and-out items leaving fashion critics and consumers alike in a tailspin of confusion. And while the house of Givenchy may be in a state of change as it welcomes its new Creative Director Matthew Williams, the centerpiece of the accessory offering, the Antigona handbag, is holding steady and celebrating its 10th anniversary by unveiling the latest bag range, Antigona Soft.
Inspired by the heroine daughter of Oedipus in Greek mythology, the now-classic Antigona, debuted for Fall 2010 collection and quickly became a House signature. Its architectural, rigid construction featured tension between feminine and masculine allure — a duality that defines the Givenchy aesthetic no matter the creative director leading the house. The series has today grown into a full-fledged collection of accessories for women and men setting the foundation for the house’s accessory empire.
The newly launched Antigona Soft layers on an element that can only come with age, the confidence to relax while remaining firm. With a slouchy, flowing shape and enveloping straps as inviting as an embrace, it conveys strength and confidence while moving seamlessly from day bag to weekender.
To kick off the celebration of the June 26th launch, Givenchy enlisted photographer Sam Rock to lens model Ajok Madel sporting the collection. The imagery shifts the weight from severe and constructed to comfortable and mobile, perhaps in keeping with the times, perhaps in a nod of things to come in Williams’s forthcoming collections. Either way, it bodes well for the house to not only have a core business that has thrived for 10 years, but understand the power of evolution and go for it. Here is to another ten.
