A new Pre-Spring 2021 campaign from Koché brilliantly subverts fashion photography to create a beautiful vision of the creative process. Creative director Christelle Kocher works once again with photography duo Suzie and Leo to present a poetic and human celebration of daily life in the studio.
The imagery brilliantly deconstructs fashion to reconsider its most essential element: the human body.
Suzie and Leo photograph their models – completely nude, save for the occasional pair of shoes or piece of jewelry – in Koché’s studio in Paris. The nudity feels sexy but not obscene; there is a celebratory and authentically human sense of beauty that radiates from these real bodies.
Not just a mere background, the studio buzzes with creativity and life: we see finished pieces of the new collection hanging on racks and workers in the process of creating them. Thus the campaign feels like a poetic vision of fashion’s creative process, encompassing simultaneous layers of beauty. We see at once finished works, the pure feminine and masculine forms that they respond to and draw inspiration from, and the physical process that gets us from one to the other.
Smart art direction uses text to playfully conceal certain anatomical features, consummating the sense of a holistic creative vision. Despite (or perhaps because of) its obvious irony as a fashion campaign where the models don’t wear clothes, the campaign feels refreshingly sincere. By subverting fashion and deconstructing the creative process, the creative team at Koché has accessed something that feels deeply true – and they have done so with beauty and honesty.
