German born Lena C. Emery has cultivated a nuanced aesthetic that draws upon her itinerant background of having moved between Switzerland, Singapore, Indonesia, Berlin and Paris, before settling in London at the age of 27.
Her photographs are both delicate as well as probing. Often permeated with Japanese influences stemming from her extensive familiarity with Japanese culture and philosophies, her work is acutely poetic.
Emery’s photographs have been published by Gestalten, Rizzoli and Self Publish Be Happy, while institutions such as Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art and Annenberg Space of Photography have exhibited her work. Emery was nominated for the FOAM Paul Huf Award 2015 and was selected amongst UK Winners by the Magenta Foundation within the Flash Forward Emerging Photographers 2016 Award.
Emery’s first monograph Rie (published by Kominek, launched at Paris Photo, 2016), was selected as one of the most engaging & exciting projects in photography by the British Journal of Photography and featured on their January 2017 cover. The book opened a distinctly feminine dialogue on the act of revealing, without allowing an inner or outer surveyor to be present.
Within the field of fashion, Emery has created thoughtfully curated imagery for Dior, Stella McCartney, Helmut Lang, Hermes, Lemaire and Tiffany. Emery’s editorial commissions characterized by their elegance, sensuality and imitation of narrative, include The Gentlewoman, M Le Magazine du Monde, Purple, Pop, British Vogue, WSJ Magazine and System.
Emery has directed films for Nowness and COS.
