Review of Heaven By Marc Jacobs Spring 2022 Ad Campaign by Photographer Harley Weir with Talent Nicki Minaj, Sky Ferreira, Paloma Elsesser, Mena Suvari, Yung Lean, and Steve Lacy
Heaven by Marc Jacobs combines the nostalgic and the contemporary with brightly harmonious results in a vibrant Spring 2022 campaign by photographer Harley Weir.
The campaign draws much of its impact from its star-studded cast made up primarily of musicians who are popular with a younger crowd and known for their bold personal style: Nicki Minaj, Yung Lean, Sky Ferreira, and Steve Lacy, who appear alongside actor Mena Suvari and model Paloma Elsesser.
Weir captures her unique subjects in a range of colorful and expressive portraiture. She mostly lenses them in simple studio spaces awash in bold colors that augment the free-spirited Y2K and grunge aesthetic influences of the collection, but occasionally makes abstract, evocative use of a prop or set piece – a lit match, a pool of water, a bed of roses à la American Beauty (with Suvari reprising her role to recreate the iconic image).
Synthesizing a hearty dose of late-90’s/early-2000’s nostalgia with the contemporary sense of optimism, subversion, and newness expressed by its casting, the campaign nails a blend of retro and right now – a perfect encapsulation of the mission behind Marc Jacobs’ Heaven.
