Tim Walker Features All-Black Cast in Pirelli’s Alice in Wonderland Themed 2018 Calendar

Alice in Wonderland has been told time and time again. However, photographer Tim Walker decided to take a different approach with the story as he portrayed it in this year’s Pirelli Calendar.

Shot in London, featuring an all-black cast from the worlds of fashion, music, and movies, Walker set the story from the very beginning, remaining true to Lewis Carroll’s version of the tale, in this 45th edition calendar. The cast consist of Naomi Campbell, Diddy, Whoopi Goldberg, Lil Yatchy, Lupita Nyong’o, and many more.

Styled by Edward Enninful, each person was given a specific Wonderland role, from Alice and the Mad Hatter, to The King and Queen of Hearts.

The first time an all-black cast was featured was in the Pirelli 1987 Calendar, shot by Terence Donovan, and where the timing for that one may have been fitting then, the timing for this one is fitting for now. Walker stated his awareness of black stories that need to be heard and told. The visual of seeing a black Alice, or a black Mad Hatter allows for a re-imagination of this classic fairy tale like no other.

Walker stated, “As a photographer, you’re standing there, focusing your camera, and looking at a certain white body shape yet again. It does become relentlessly uninspiring when there are so many other forms of beauty in the world.”

The All-Star cast also expressed their excitement to be a part of this shoot, as they felt that each role they played from the Wonderland carried great weight as they reflected how we should all get lost in the rabbit hole that is dreaming and being hopeful.

The Impression values this acknowledgement and telling of a commonly heard story from unheard voices. We also commend Pirelli and Walker’s for placing black viewpoints on a larger scale in the conversation of fashion.
