It’s the Accessories, Stupid When a stylist turns designer, the luxury is in the details
Ports 1961 went through a rebrand and evolved into a “modern creative collective” in 2019, onboarding Karl Templer as Artistic Director. Looks like a good thing when a stylist and former creative director of Interview takes over the reins at a fashion house. His second show for the brand displays his eye as stylist extraordinaire and his business acumen, continuing the course he has seemingly set towards a build out of their accessories department. While the house was not known for accessories, Templer’s got strong game and impactful ideas in that sector, which is smart because it’s a catchy and effective way to attract new customers, create hype and generate revenue. It will be interesting to see where his innovative trompe l’oeil boots will go – the ones Kaia had on are definitely covetable. The chunky, gold chain belts and jewelry are a shoo-in; the double aspect bags will probably be copied by others; or the eclectic object trouvé mismatched cameo earrings, rings, and necklaces could become a thing. When you start seeing triple breasted jackets in the future, you know who called it first.
Templer approached the collection from a stylist’s lens, explaining, “It’s about beautiful clothing and the way that a woman finds her own style within these beautiful pieces and the fact that it’s very pulled together, the way you kind of evolve your look, your own personal interpretation of style.” Like the icing on a cake, it’s the styling which turns clothes into fashion. In this sea of Milan minimalism, the elaborate fabrics, prints, and construction of the garments felt luxurious. There was a feminine daintiness to the florals and fluid silk pieces in counterpoint to the bold, deconstructed volumes of the outerwear. This delicate vulnerability within a larger, protective shell seems to be a trend this season, possibly as a subconscious manifestation of our unstable times.
All in all a tasteful collection full of sophistication, Ports 1961 is definitely one to watch with such a seasoned professional with a deliberate point of view at the helm.
