Vol.4 Sp18 | The Issues Issue | David Lipman Cover
The Issues Issue, is devoted to inviting the fashion industry to share pressing issues of today to open dialogue and inspire hope. The theme for the issue came to Editor-in-Chief Kenneth Richard in response to conversations he was having with creatives. “Fashion creatives create aspirational dreams and it’s frustrating to see microphones held up to these worldly creatives asking them about wearing white after labour day. High time we heard their thoughts on real world issues and how those issues impact their creative process.”
This focus on issues is present throughout the magazine with Christian Dior’s first female Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, speaking about feminism and the promise of a better world for female creatives.
Vanessa Friedman, Karlie Kloss, Tory Burch, Serge Ruffieux, Diane Von Furstenberg, Dao-Yi Chow, Maxwell Osborne, and Marcus Wainwright joined 30 other influencers to reflect on issues important to them from human trafficking to gun safety as artists Hisham Akira Bharoocha, Deanne Cheuk, Merijn Hos, and MVM of Hugo & Marie translate their ideas into visual statements while Mario Hugo worked on the publications overarching art assets.
David Lipman addresses racism and the inclusivity of the American dream in his story entitled “I Am Not Your Negro” inspired by social activist James Baldwin. Lipman along with author Kenza Fourati captured the courageous story of model Nadja Giramata and her confrontation with genocide, migration, immigration, and racism. Iconic photographer Rankin tackles ageism and the abuses of social media apps that pervert self-image. Photographers Chuando & Frey explore the dangers of overexposure and projecting fake versions of one’s life for the sake of digital followers. Creative Director Gillian O’Brien of The Flower Laboratory teamed with Photographer/Director Mike Figgis to talk about the power of face-to-face connectivity. Model Guinevere Van Seenus is the focus of self-reflecting on the human condition for Robert Lussier & Mia Forsgren of The Style Council and their story lensed by Jennifer Livingston.
