While on a driving tour of Italy’s denim manufacturers, designer Chris Leba, envisioned the R13 label with a singular goal—presenting luxury basics inflected with rebellious, true-grit American spirit.
Launched in 2009, R13 continues to break ground with its first-ever freestanding retail location at 34 Howard Street, an 1,800 square foot space that plays on the dynamic energy that defines lower Manhattan. Chris and well-known architect Leong Leong developed the flagship in a year-long initiative aimed to create an innovative shopping experience—an elevated yet minimalist setting in line with the brand’s DNA. Exposed brick and concrete set the tone for a raw-edged interior with five modular rack installations, illuminated with LED screens.
R13’s progressive vision includes a recently completed glass-walled garden accessible to customers at rear of the store. As Leba describes it, this “sweet escape, in a city of madness” adds a natural element to the industrial backdrop – a mix of that reflects the endless contradictions that define this ultracontemporary new space.
