The Row | Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen Launch Menswear
Luxe fashion and accessories house The Row, founded by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in 2006, is adding menswear to the portfolio.
Beginning this October, the design duo will make suits, coats, knitwear, denim, T-shirts, footwear and accessories available at the firm’s New York and Los Angeles retail locations, as well as select retail partners. The launch isn’t the first time the pair tipped their toes into menswear having introduced a short-lived soft tailored menswear collection in 2009 and a capsule collection in 2016. However the duo believe third time is a charm after spending two years in development.
It’s important for us to do the research. We want to be able to offer the menswear market those same core foundation pieces at a luxury level.
That research has resulted in global manufacturing complex including tailored pieces produced in Japan after the pair tested factories searching for the ideal combination of technology and craftsmanship. Cotton shirting will be produced in France, knitwear in Italy, denim and t-shirts in the U.S.A. According the press release the aesthetic will have a different bent than the duos previous relaxed look to “combine the refinement of a classic bespoke experience with the precise minimal masculine style of New York specific to the 80s and the 90s.” Which upon a trip down memory lane recalls the stellar success of Helmut Lang’s menswear, a void left wide open post the designers departure from the house.
