Designer Yasuko Furuta named her label ‘Toga’ in 1997 to pay homage to the perfect simplicity of the ancient Rome garment. And with that same sense of directness, the designer has teamed with photographer Chikashi Suzuki to capture the spirit of her Spring 2019 Collection in the houses two image Sprign 2019 ad campaign.
The campaign stars Japanese actress Sakura Ando who stars in a top-rated soap in Japan called Manpuku as well a central character in the 2018 Japanese drama Shoplifters, winner of the Palme d’Or in Venice this year. The film was also recently nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Ando borders on surreal casualness in the campaign lensed in Japan. Graphic designer Gianni Oprandi lends his touch to the pieces. Updating the traditional Kodax film strips with golden dot-matrix elements along with flourishes of neon.
Overall the campaign longs for more, and hopefully, the house is hanging onto assets to release in social, which will come in handy if Ando ends up on the Oscar red carpet. We can’t wait to see if she is sporting Toga and her flippant attitude.
