Review of Tory Burch Fall 2021 Ad Campaign by Creative Director Honor Brodie with Photographer Mikael Jansson with models Malaika Holmen, Sacha Quenby, and He Cong
Tory Burch welcomes autumn in New York with a cinematic and dreamy new campaign. The Fall 2021 campaign features creative direction from Honor Brodie and photography by Mikael Jansson.
Though she was still unable to do a live show, the presentation for this collection marked a return for Tory Burch to her home base of New York City (she held her previous show at Hancock, Massachusetts’ Shaker village). With masculine tailoring and references to the early days of women’s sportswear, the collection is a contemporary ode to mid-20th century American fashion design.
Fall/Winter 2021 is inspired by New York City. It is both the dream and the reality of possibilities… opportunity, creativity, and diversity. The collection reinterprets American luxury and sportswear, channeled through the attitude of classic New York. Timeless pieces that are grounded in the reality of how women want to dress. It starts with the idea of seasonless dressing and layers, the foundation of wardrobes women will reimagine in their own way.

The campaign develops on these visual themes and historic references, situating the pieces in a sumptuous vision of the city that is somewhere between cinema, dreams, and reality. By making excellent use of projection, light, and color, Brodie and Jansson get a lot of depth and complexity out of a simple visual concept. Working in-studio, they project vintage black-and-white images of the city’s streets against the back wall. The space is decorated with props (the vintage sports car is a beautiful visual which works nicely with the theme of design heritage) and light fixtures, and occupied by larger-than-life characters. Jansson shoots in color, so the resulting images are a hybrid of color and black-and-white photography, making for a unique feeling of nostalgia and timelessness.
Among this scene, the models feel like both classic heroines of cinema and distinctly contemporary women. Conceptually, the possibility and glamor suggested by classic Hollywood harmonizes well with Burch’s design ideal of flexibility and reimagining personal expression through dressing.
At once nostalgically imaginative and grounded in the contemporary, the campaign occupies an uplifting creative realm where the real and the ideal converge.
